Alzheimer’s disease was the most common type of senile dementia.
It was a progressive neurologic disorder that caused the brain to degenerate at old age.
It was a chronic ongoing condition that interfered with the individual’s ability to carry out daily activities. Eventually, it would negatively affect the individual’s memory, thinking, analyzing skills, space recognition, and emotions even in the absence of consciousness disorders.
Once Mr. Zhang Zhongjie’s nanny mentioned his illness, Ye Tianxin began thinking about everything she knew about it.
If she never studied medicine, she might not be sure what Alzheimer’s was.
Since she did study medicine, however, she knew all too well what that meant.
It meant that their trip here might’ve been for nothing..
“Mr. Zhang, do you have any memory about this missing people notice?”
Even if Xie Xuning knew that Associate Director Zhang Zhongjie was ill, he had no intention of giving up.
He wanted to know the truth of what happened back then.
Mr. Zhang Zhongjie reached out his bony hands and took the yellowed newspaper from Xie Xuning. He seemed to be scrutinizing the words in the newspaper.
After quite a while, there was a gleam in Zhang Zhongjie’s muddy-looking eyes.
“Xie…”
Xie Xuning was stunned for a moment when Zhang Zhongjie uttered the word “Xie”.
“Xie…”
Zhang Zhongjie spoke very slowly.
He quivered and kept the newspaper to himself.
Upon seeing that, the nanny immediately seized the newspaper from Zhang Zhongjie and returned it to Xie Xuning.
“Please keep the newspaper to yourself. He doesn’t even know what you’re talking about. He’s thanking you as he thought you’re giving that to him.”
“Give it back to me…” Zhang Zhongjie started weeping once the newspaper was taken away from him by the nanny.
“This is not for you. It belongs to them.”
Zhang Zhongjie stood up from his wheelchair as the nanny spoke, his legs wobbling badly.
His legs were too weak to support his weight. As soon as he stood up, he stumbled and fell before Xie Xuning and Ye Tianxin.
“M...mine…”
Zhang Zhongjie pointed his fingers at the newspaper when Xie Xuning helped him up from the ground.
Suddenly, Zhang Zhongjie froze in place.
“I peed!”
The nanny helped Zhang Zhongjie into the wheelchair and said, “I’ll change your diapers in a moment.”
Xie Xuning and Ye Tianxin looked at each other. They both knew that this was a pointless trip.
“Please leave. Mr. Zhang’s unable to tell you anything else.”
Ye Tianxin stared at Zhang Zhongjie pitifully. Was this what it was going to be like once she got old?
It was too scary to even imagine.
Ye Tianxin asked the nanny, “Is there anything that we can help with?”
The nanny shook her head and replied, “No, it’s fine. I can manage by myself. You guys should leave.”
The nanny kept on ushering them to leave. It was as if Ye Tianxin and Xie Xuning had suddenly turned up uninvited guests.
“Let’s go then.”
When Xie Xuning and Ye Tianxin came out from the courtyard, the snow had stopped falling from the sky.
A thick layer of snow piled on the pine trees in the distance.
“Dad, why’s there only Mr. Zhang and his nanny in this courtyard? Where’s the rest of his family?”
Xie Xuning replied, “Zhang Zhongjie has a son and a daughter, but they’ve both migrated with their own families.”
“That’s why they left the old man with a nanny alone here? Hadn’t it crossed their minds once that their parents actually needed their company?”
Ye Tianxin drooped her eyelids with a hint of suspicion in her eyes.
The old man, Zhang Zhongjie, was so skinny that it seemed a bit abnormal.
There was also the possibility that the nanny abused him.
They were his children. How could they abandon their elderly father here and migrate overseas as if their father meant nothing to them?
