Grand Voyage : Surviving on a Ghost Ship

Chapter 8 - Did I just catch some fruit?

Daylight remaining: 8 hours

Temperature: 15~25°C

Wind strength: Level 1

Yang Yi was desperately fishing.

He urgently needed not only freshwater but also medical supplies, both of which could be obtained through fishing.

Yang Yi checked the world channel and found that someone had previously caught a bandage of common quality, which had rapid healing and anti-inflammatory effects. Although the bandage wouldn't significantly help his current injuries, other medical supplies had to exist as well!

He had to make the most of his time fishing.

【You fished up a piece of rotten wood.】

【You fished up a Long-Legged Sardine.】

【You fished up a Long-Legged Sardine.】

【You fished up a piece of rotten cloth.】

【...】

“FxxK!” Yang Yi cursed as he grabbed a long-legged sardine, bit off its head, and swallowed it whole. He recalled that a survival expert once mentioned that everything except the head was edible.

Yang Yi was starving, so he ate the fish as soon as he caught it. As for the fact that eating raw long-legged sardines would reduce his sanity, that was the least of his concerns at the moment. He was on the brink of starvation; how could he be fussy?

When you're desperate from hunger, anything goes!

After eating a few, Yang Yi made a new discovery: sanity reduction from eating the same type of fish repeatedly seemed to decrease over time. Initially, eating a long-legged sardine would lower his sanity by 2 points, but now it mostly dropped by 1.

It seemed that after eating enough of these fish, he'd eventually get used to it and stop losing any sanity.

Moreover, his mental experience points were rapidly increasing. The growth of his mental state seemed to be related to the stimuli that reduced his sanity.

After two more hours of fishing, Yang Yi's condition worsened. His wounds became unbearably itchy, but he resisted scratching to avoid further infection. Meanwhile, due to diarrhoea, he had lost a significant amount of water and electrolytes.

Adding to that, his fever had caused his vision to blur, leaving him feeling increasingly dizzy and lightheaded.

"Just a little longer, I have to catch some life-saving medicine!" Yang Yi forced himself to continue fishing, finally pulling up something he hadn't seen before.

【You fished up an Eyeball Fish.】

It was a fish with a single eye, about the size of a fist, which blinked occasionally.

【Name: Eyeball Fish

【Description: it is a type of fish that comes from the Abyss. Despite its eerie appearance, it tastes sweet. It replenishes vitamins, electrolytes, and water.

Without hesitation, Yang Yi bit into it, causing black fluid to squirt out. The Eyeball Fish trembled slightly in his hand.

【Your sanity decreased by 2.】

Creepiness aside, the fish tasted far better than the sardines. The flesh inside was slightly sweet, and Yang Yi devoured it completely. After the delicious

1 meal, Yang Yi felt refreshed. His diarrhoea nearly stopped, but the corpse poison infection persisted.

Could it be that fishing wouldn’t yield any antidotes for the poison? Impossible! A fisherman can catch anything!

But even after fishing all night, Yang Yi hadn’t caught medical supplies. He did, however, catch a bottle of freshwater. His total haul was:

【Eyeball Fish x2, Long-Legged Sardine x8, Wood x10, Cloth x9, Cystic Pufferfish x1, Freshwater 1.5 litre】

Everything else Yang Yi caught had already been consumed. The 1.5L of freshwater, equivalent to one unit, could be stored in the cabin, but required a container when taken out. The cabin wasn’t a physical concept; it stored resources like wood, cloth, freshwater, and steel as invisible data that could be retrieved when needed.

Yang Yi, parched, had already downed one-third of a bottle of water. He had to conserve what remained, as it was a rare resource.

During nightfall, Yang Yi didn’t dare linger on the deck. He ended his fishing session and returned to the captain's cabin. As usual, he simply placed the flintlock gun by his side and lay down on the bed to sleep. The fever and infected wounds tormented him relentlessly.

It was destined to be another sleepless night, especially with the gnarly nightmares...

Unable to sleep, Yang Yi opened the chat channel, still bustling despite the time. However, those who paid close attention would notice the channel no longer displayed the same number of online users as before. The dead don’t speak; they vanish without a trace...

"I just made two spears. If a skeleton dares to come tonight, I'll make it explode into coins!"

"Bro, have you ever played games before? Don't you know skeletons have natural resistance to piercing? You'd be better off punching it!"

"Taking orders for steel, I still need 982 units. DM me for details!"

"Iron Heart, you’re still alive?"

"Hell yeah! Even if you all die, I won't!"

"How do you outrun the black mist with a speed of only five knots?"

"Give me steel, and I'll tell you!"

"Screw you! I don’t want to know!"

[...]

At the rear of all the vessels, an ironclad warship was desperately fleeing. Not far behind it, the black mist advanced at ten knots. The sea beneath was teeming with fish, all fleeing from the black mist in terror. A chubby Chinese man stood on the bridge, unshaven, with a cigarette dangling from his mouth and his hand on the ship's wheel. 2

Despite his arrogant and carefree attitude in chat, he truthfully was scared to death. Any slight misstep could cost him his life. Chattering nonsense was one of the few ways he could relieve his stress.

His ship was well-supplied, with unlimited ammo and incredible durability. The only drawback was its slow speed, making it likely to be overtaken by the black mist. Unfortunately, he had started the game close to it.

He luckily had a giant whaling harpoon on board, a weapon designed to pierce and lodge into massive marine creatures, making it difficult to remove. He was now on the lookout for his next target — a fast-swimming, large creature to hitch a ride with and boost his ship's speed.

"Damn it, can't these stupid fish last a bit longer? They have such poor stamina!" He grumbled as he retracted the harpoon and aimed at his next target, trying to pick a fast and big one.

This method had allowed him to survive this far, but left him with only three hours of sleep. The rest of the time was spent searching for targets. After all, these giant fish also bled, tired out, and eventually died...

As for any creature foolish enough to attack his ship, he would teach them what "firepower suppression" and "civilised cannons" meant!

The following day, Yang Yi woke up with difficulty, his head throbbing. He wasn’t sure when he had fallen asleep, but he knew he had dreamt of ominous things that left him nauseous. This ship was in worse shape than he had anticipated.

Without other means to restore his energy, his efficiency in the game would drop significantly with every passing second. Even if he had rested the entire night, his energy had only recovered by 30 points. Meanwhile, the corpse poison infection had worsened. His wounds were no longer itchy but had a faint stabbing pain, which was not a good sign...

Moreover, they emitted a nauseating stench, like the odour of a long-dead fish, or the smell of the Drowned Revenant. Human immunity was no match for this type of poison!

His attributes, including strength, agility, and constitution, had all decreased by 2, placing him in a weakened state.

But Yang Yi did not despair. He had experienced worse — being bedridden for five years.

He stepped out of the captain's cabin, entered the ship's hold, and ate two Eyeball Fish and several Long-Legged Sardines for breakfast before resuming his fishing. Luck was on his side that day 3, as his first catch was an Eyeball Fish.

【You fished up an Eyeball Fish.】

【You fished up a Long-legged Sardine.】

【You fished up a piece of rotten wood.】

【You fished up…】

Suddenly, Yang Yi's vision went black, and he collapsed onto the deck, falling unconscious.
