Chapter 96 - 90: Holding Hands
“No need, it’s too late, and I don’t want to go out. Besides, it would be a waste.” Qiao Jing had barely finished speaking when Zhan Qipei snatched the noodles from her hands and proceeded to finish the remaining noodles in the bowl right in front of her.
“There, no waste. Let’s go,” Zhan Qipei said, putting down the bowl and looking at Qiao Jing.
Qiao Jing sat on the couch, stunned. As clever as she was, she couldn’t fathom the man’s behavior.
“Let’s go.” Seeing Qiao Jing unmoving, Zhan Qipei reached out, took Qiao Jing by the wrist, pulled her up from the couch, and dragged her out the door.
Qiao Jing kept staring at the man’s hand, a strange sensation inexplicably rising in her heart. Unable to describe it… if she had to… it was very subtle…
“Brother Pei!” The elevator doors opened, and there came the sweet call of Lou Xinrou.
The next second, upon seeing Zhan Qipei holding Qiao Jing’s hand, Lou Xinrou’s whole demeanor changed for the worse.
Qiao Jing tugged at her hand, and that’s when Zhan Qipei realized he was still holding onto it.
After they exchanged glances, they simultaneously turned their heads away, neither of them mentioning the incident.
Lou Xinrou looked at Zhan Qipei, then at Qiao Jing. Although she didn’t know what had transpired between them, one thing was certain—her Brother Pei would soon no longer be hers.
“Brother Pei, it’s so late, where are you two going?”
Zhan Qipei turned to Qiao Jing, “What do you want to eat?”
After thinking for a moment, Qiao Jing said, “I found out that before my mom passed away, she used to eat beef noodles at Li Ji Noodle House often.”
“Then let’s go there.”
“Okay,” Qiao Jing replied with a smile towards Zhan Qipei.
Seeing the smile unfold on the girl’s face, Zhan Qipei was momentarily dazzled.
The girl’s eyes, which had shed tears, were brighter and clearer than ever before, like a little deer peering out from the depths of the forest, large and moist, making one unable to resist feeling tender towards her.
Added to that, the girl’s nose was slightly red from crying and her lips a little swollen, the more he looked, the more he couldn’t help wanting to hold her close and comfort her.
Lou Xinrou watched Qiao Jing with evident jealousy, feeling utterly superfluous.
Before long, they arrived at Li Ji Noodle House.
It was a tiny storefront with only four tables—two six-seaters and two four-seaters.
“This place… Brother Pei, it doesn’t look very sanitary. Shall we go somewhere else?”
As Lou Xinrou spoke, Qiao Jing had already entered the noodle house.
Zhan Qipei turned to Lou Xinrou, “Go ahead.”
After saying that, Zhan Qipei followed Qiao Jing’s steps into the restaurant.
Lou Xinrou was dumbfounded once again. It was over; her Brother Pei was going to be taken away.
After hesitating for two seconds, Lou Xinrou, despite feeling disgusted at heart, followed them into the restaurant.
“Boss, a bowl of beef noodles,” Qiao Jing called out.
“Alrighty, one bowl of beef noodles,” the boss replied, then looked at Zhan Qipei and Lou Xinrou, “What will you have?”
“The same as her,” Zhan Qipei answered.
“And you?” the boss asked Lou Xinrou.
Lou Xinrou clenched her back teeth, “The same as him.”
“Alrighty, three bowls of beef noodles.”
Soon, the boss brought over the first bowl of noodles.
Then Lou Xinrou saw Zhan Qipei place the bowl in front of Qiao Jing and hand her a pair of chopsticks he’d wiped clean with a paper towel.
“Thank you,” Qiao Jing said, accepting the chopsticks and taking a big bite, her face gradually lighting up with a blissful smile.
Zhan Qipei kept his gaze on Qiao Jing, and seeing her like this, his mood also lifted.
Lou Xinrou was so angry her nose might as well have been crooked. Why was Qiao Jing served the first bowl of noodles? She was the childhood friend you grew up with!
The second and third bowls of noodles were brought out almost at the same time; the owner carried one in his left hand and another in his right, placing them in front of Zhan Qipei and Lou Xinrou.
Lou Xinrou glared fiercely at the owner. Couldn’t you bring them one by one? That way, Zhan Qipei could have set the bowl down in front of her.
That opportunity was gone, but there was still the chance to pass the chopsticks.
“Brother Pei, could you pass me a pair of chopsticks?”
The box of chopsticks was on Zhan Qipei’s side, which presented Lou Xinrou with a good opportunity.
Zhan Qipei casually grabbed a pair and passed them to Lou Xinrou.
Is that it?
Lou Xinrou blinked in disbelief, why was there such a big difference between the way he treated her and Qiao Jing? When he gave Qiao Jing chopsticks, she clearly saw Zhan Qipei carefully wipe the chopsticks three times with a napkin before handing them over to Qiao Jing.
But when it came to her turn, not a single wipe, just passed over directly?
“Hmm?” Zhan Qipei made a puzzled sound when he saw Lou Xinrou not reaching out to take them.
“Oh, right.” Lou Xinrou snapped out of it but didn’t hurry to take them; instead, she deliberately hinted, “These chopsticks aren’t individually wrapped; they seem kind of unclean.”
“Right, just give them a wipe yourself,” Zhan Qipei said before setting the chopsticks down on top of Lou Xinrou’s bowl.
Lou Xinrou “…”
So she should just wipe them herself?
So she has hands, but Qiao Jing doesn’t? Can’t she wipe for herself? Does she need you to do it for her?
And to wipe three times!
Furious!
Lou Xinrou was so angry she couldn’t even eat.
But seeing that Zhan Qipei had already started eating, if she didn’t eat, it would seem like she and he were from different worlds.
Thinking this, Lou Xinrou suppressed the nausea and lifted some noodles to her mouth.
“Ptui, ptui, ptui—how can this taste good? These noodles are way too rough, and this meat, you can tell it’s not imported premium beef, not fresh at all, and has a weird taste. Is this even edible?”
No sooner had Lou Xinrou spoken than Qiao Jing stopped eating her noodles, lifted her head with an expressionless face, and her gaze towards Lou Xinrou was icy and chilling.
The owner also glanced over at Lou Xinrou, curled his lip but said nothing.
“What are you looking at? I’m not used to eating this. I’ve grown up and the least I’ve been to is a three-star restaurant; I’ve never been to this kind of roadside stall. I’m not like you, growing up in the countryside, able to eat anything that’s crudely made.”
“Lou Xinrou!” Zhan Qipei exploded.
Lou Xinrou jumped in fright, turning to look at Zhan Qipei with an unwelcoming expression.
“Brother Pei, I—”
“Apologize to her!” Zhan Qipei, half-closing his dark eyes, told Lou Xinrou.
Lou Xinrou pursed her lips, and her eyes immediately reddened.
“If you want to cry, go cry outside. The owner still has business to run. You being here, it affects others,” Qiao Jing said coldly before continuing with her noodles.
Lou Xinrou was about to explode with rage, and couldn’t stand staying there any longer; she got up and ran out.
Qiao Jing lifted her head again to look at Zhan Qipei, “Aren’t you going after her?”
Was she worried about Lou Xinrou running out alone because it might be dangerous? After all, there were few people around.
Lou Xinrou had just run out when she heard Qiao Jing say this. Truthfully, she really hoped Zhan Qipei would chase after her.
Of course, she would never thank Qiao Jing for speaking up for her.
Just as Lou Xinrou was thinking this, Qiao Jing’s voice came out of the noodle house again.
“Tell her when you catch up to pay for her noodles before leaving.”
