Chapter 227 - Getting Acquainted
What differentiated a human from a beast? That was a question many had asked. Klautz had his own beliefs regarding this.
What differentiated a human from a beast was their tendency to leave behind a legacy. Their offspring often carry their will. It burns through them as it is passed onto from generation to generation.
A monkey thus has no clue about their ancestors while the same wasn\'t true about humans. Many humans, even though dead, had left their marks on history.
A monkey might seem pitiful in comparison to humans.... He might not be able to leave behind his will but at least, he was able to leave behind his bones.
But the humans who couldn\'t even do that had a fate worse than these wild creatures. That was what Klautz believed and that was the fate of every ninja.
Ninjas had the pitiful fate of destroying their own bodies before bleeding to death. There was no disgrace to a human higher than the inability to not even leave behind his bones.
\'Even I was the same,\' Klautz thought.
In the last moments of his life, as Klautz\'s lifeforce was fleeting, Klautz had chosen to kill himself. But that didn\'t mean that he didn\'t make sure that he had destroyed his dead body. He was a ninja through and through.
He had plunged his body into the great river Styx. The fast flowing current had taken his body and slashed them across sharp rocks a hundred of times tearing him apart into a thousand pieces until even his bones had become a churn of white powder dissolved into the waters of the river of death never to be found.
"Amazing!"
Evelyn clasped her hands as she saw the burning skull of the man who had once tried to rape her. A blooming smile blossomed on her face.
Watching it burn and getting to know the implications of its deeper meanings gave her a strange sense of euphoria. She realized that there was more to Klautz than what it looks like on the surface.
"You know what? I think there is nothing better to be seen after I have seen this. I will just tell you everything. My life has come to an end anyway. But I should at least thank you for this since you showed me such a beautiful sight."
Klautz raised his brows.
"Is that so? I am glad that you like it."
All Klautz did was plunge a skull into the fire but to the seeker of art this could have been an enlightening encounter. Or at least that was what Klautz believed.
Evelyn nodded as she took out a dagger from her inventory. Klautz was alarmed but it turned out that the dagger was a used one with its edge blunt enough to be of no threat to even the weakest of rabbits.
Sticking out her tongue she began scribbling on the ground pushing away the snow and making marks on it. It looked as if she was an artist at work, with the only notable difference being that the canvas was made of snow instead.
As she pulled her dagger away she took a glance at her work which seemed to be sort of a mini map.
Had it been any other newbie he might have difficulty discerning what sort of map it was but Klautz knew better. It was a mini map of the areas around the newbie camp.
\'I\'m impressed,\' Klautz nodded.
Just the fact that Evelyn was able to discern the area around her to such a degree was indeed a feat to be noticed and acknowledged. The average newbie won\'t be able to do so.
\'Perhaps it has something to do with her ability?\' Klautz thought.
"This is the area around the newbie camp, as you might already know." Evelyn explained.
She poked the map at the specific point and continued.
"This here is the building that we reside in with the other newbies. Close to it are several hotspots for fighting monsters."
"This one here is the Forest of Roots. And the one next to that is the Horned Forest. That is where I am usually stationed for grinding and that is where the ninjas appear to meet up. What they usually do is seek for updates regarding my work."
Klautz nodded.
Evelyn took a glance at the man she was explaining, confirming if he could digest the information so far. Fortunately, Klautz was as smart as she had expected.
"I am sure that the ninjas are the ones you are looking for. If nothing goes wrong, then tomorrow too they will appear there. Though I can never be sure. The only reason I did what they told me was because I had my life on the line."
Evelyn shrugged. Now that she thought back on it, she realized that there was no point in doing all of that. She would die anyway. Her emerald eyes had already lost their glow.
Klautz nodded as he took a glance at Evelyn holding onto his chin.
\'If that\'s really the case. It would be best to use her as bait.\'
Klautz had received crucial information. But the conversation didn\'t stop at that there was of course much to be drawn out from her, more than what it looked like.
Klautz bombarded her with questions of many sorts. Every meeting with the ninjas was perfectly post motomed from her memory to draw out the most amount of information possible. After all, Klautz was meticulous with his plan and he couldn\'t have any stones left unturned as let any variable seep through in his plans.
When he was finally satisfied with all of the answers. He was able to let out a sigh of relief.
"What\'s your name?" Klautz asked his last question.
But, Evelyn\'s eyes widened for reasons unknown to Klautz.
