Chapter 49: Win-Win

Su Ye rushed to flip open his spellbook and looked at the time. He let out a look of joy. It was six in the morning.

Su Ye washed up happily, then bathed in the sun in his yard to boost the secretion of serotonin. He took advantage of his energized state to engage in ten minutes of deep meditation. He then quickly flipped through the notes he took yesterday about today’s lessons before finally leaving the house.

He glanced around as he walked, but he could not find breakfast nor Uncle Figo.

Su Ye got a quick bite at a breakfast stand, then rushed toward school.

A few students were walking into the academy just as he arrived.

Su Ye heaved a sigh of relief.

Su Ye finally felt like a real student on the third day of school. He walked toward his class, following the marble columns with dignity.

There was no longer the scent of mud and grass under his feet.

There were only a dozen people in the class. Su Ye looked at them closely and thought to himself, “Are my deskmates all this hardworking?”

There were four people seated at the last table.

Palos, Hort, Laker, and Rolon were all reading their books seriously.

Jimmy and Ebert were not there.

Su Ye had a faint smile when he saw these people.

He walked to the side of the table and smiled, “Good morning.”

The four of them looked up in unison. They stared at Su Ye with a look of disbelief.

“Why are you here already?” Hort could not help but ask.

Laker asked, “Su Ye, are you alright? We all guessed that you would definitely be late today.”

Su Ye smiled. “Why would a student who loves to study like me be late? From today on, I will definitely come early and leave late and study hard.”

“Only a fool would believe you.” Laker looked down and continued with his book after he spoke.

Hort was excited. He whispered, “I have to thank you. The method you taught me yesterday of using a map to remember was very useful! In the past, I would often get confused when I heard about the introspection form of the different mages from the four nations. After you taught me that method, the map would surface in my brain every time I thought about it, and I can now remember the four introspection forms and Flying Magic Weapons clearly. I will definitely not get it wrong during the exam.”

Su Ye smiled. “I’m glad that it is useful for you.”

Su Ye thought. Within the map was a memory method that involved every kind of image and color. The giant hourglasses and Magic Towers were a part of a memory method using exaggeration, while the moving images made use of the movement memory method. Putting these things together complemented the principles of memory chunking, which was equivalent to using four methods of memory at once. He had spent a great deal of time grasping this technique. Of course, it would be effective.

Laker and Rolon seemed to disregard their conversation, but Palos was actively listening in on them.

Palos thought in her heart, “I heard their conversation yesterday. I did not expect for even Hort to say that it was useful. I’ll remember this incident for now and use it, and any other methods they have if their grades improve.”

Palos noted this down in her spellbook seriously.

Su Ye sat down and quickly read yesterday’s notes again. He then told Hort, “I found several important key points yesterday. Do you want to hear them?”

Hort said in a hurry, “Great, I want to hear them! You are too awesome!”

Su Ye chose a few of the key points he found most important about magic knowledge and started explaining them.

Hort listened to him happily. He occasionally asked questions that stumped Su Ye.

Su Ye could only think along the lines of Hort’s questions and answer if he could. He would note the questions down if he could not and think about it later or ask a teacher.

The questions he could answer revealed that his understanding of a certain concept was not deep enough.

The rest of the students in class engaged in their activities. A few of the students who had above-average grades pointed at Su Ye and Hort. They secretly mocked the two fools for studying.

Only Palos was silently noting down aspects of their conversation. She then continued with her studies.

The classroom became noisier and noisier as more people entered. Su Ye and Hort moved to the window at the very back of the class. One learned while teaching, and the other listened to the lesson.

Sometime later, Su Ye realized that he was going against his principles.

As long as he could not be certain that the other party was an enemy, and as long as there was potential for cooperation with the other party, then he should guide his actions using the “win-win” concept.

Furthermore, Hort was a classmate who was on good terms with him. He had helped him in the past.

Now was not the time for Su Ye to directly reveal the Feynman Technique. He had requested for Hort to try teaching him on several occasions. However, Hort was not willing to no matter how hard he tried. He thought that there was no way that he could voice out the concepts.

Su Ye had tried many times, but could only give up since Hort was unwilling. He told himself that he would reveal the Feynman Technique when his grades improved in the future. He would be able to convince Hort then.

However, Su Ye continued to be guided by the “win-win” mentality. He did not put Hort at a disadvantage. Not only did he help clear Hort’s confusion, but he even actively imparted small techniques to Hort, such as a variety of other memory methods. Su Ye even deliberately used the memory methods repeatedly. The more he used the techniques, the more Hort would trust the method, and he would refine it whenever the opportunity arose. He then allowed Hort to practice these memory techniques.

In actuality, the Feynman Technique only focused on individual learning and required one to teach the concepts to an imaginary person. But the effects of teaching a real person were much better.

Soon, the bell for the first class rang. Su Ye and Hort were a little reluctant to split apart.

Hort said excitedly, “Su Ye, how about you teach me like that in the future? I feel like I learned a lot of things. It’s awesome!”

Su Ye thought for a moment, then said honestly, “This is a study method that I am experimenting with. I’ll increase the efficiency of my studies by teaching you like that. I do not want to do this all the time, though. I am afraid that you might feel that I am using you as time goes on.”

Hort became even happier when he heard this. He said, “I was feeling embarrassed, even guilty, for holding you up just now! Since you said that you are doing it for your learning and I feel that I am doing it for my learning, wouldn’t it be good if we continued to study like this! It’s set, I’ll help you if anybody calls you a fool in the future! I’ll get my classmates for help if I can’t beat them! We’ll get the teacher if my classmate can’t beat them. Two of my classmates have already become teachers in the academy!”

Hort was elated when he said this. He looked like an elder brother caring for his younger sibling.

Su Ye did not know whether to laugh or to cry. Only Laker and himself were relatively normal at the fifth table.

The first class in the morning was still Teacher Niedern’s class. The classes he taught were more important and were thus longer.

At some point during the class, Niedern suddenly stopped and looked at the fourth table.

“Does anybody know why Hutton is not here?”

Several students shook their heads.

Su Ye realized only now that there was an empty seat at the table in front of him.

Su Ye also shook his head.

“Alright, let’s continue with the lesson.” Niedern’s tone was obviously different from just now.

Several students turned their heads to look at Su Ye. Some of them even had a faint smile.

Su Ye had come today, but Hutton had not.

People had been late for three consecutive days. It was no wonder that Niedern was angry.

The class was nearly over when heavy footsteps could be heard outside the door.

Everyone put down their spellbooks and looked toward the door.

All they saw was a blood-covered teen standing by the door. Even though it looked like he had just washed his face, his nose was crooked, and his upper lip was split open. He had lost four or five of his teeth, and the inside of his mouth looked black. His face was both green and red and swollen. There were tears in his eyes, as well as traces of tears that had not been wiped clean.

Everyone was lost. Who was this? Why did he come to our class?

Many people reacted a few seconds later.

Wasn’t that Hutton?
